AFGHANISTAN. Herat: United States President Donald Trump took to Twitter to compare US elections with Afghanistan elections. In a recent tweet, Trump said, “A young man working in Afghanistan told me that the elections in Afghanistan are far more secure and much better run than USA’s 2020 Election. Ours, with millions and millions of corrupt Mail-In Ballots, was the election of a third world country. Fake President!”

Many people came forward to show their disappointment over EU envoy’s statement.

Ali Adili, researcher and writer from Kabul wrote, “I thought the EU has its own principles and standards for judging elections, not a tweet that has been flagged for its content. Elections, not the kind of them we have had so far, should be supported against any other alternatives in designing future stability for Afghanistan.”

Meanwhile, the US President has continued to criticize the US Supreme Court, for acting “weak” against the “massive fraud” in the 2020 presidential election.

Afghanistan presidential elections with US mediators

Trump compared the Afghanistan presidential elections with the US at the time when the last two presidential elections of Afghanistan were alleged as fraud and controversial. In 2014 John Kerry, US Secretary of State had to travel to Kabul twice to form a national unity government between Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, CEO of the national unity government, and President Ashraf Ghani.

In 2020, fraud in the election and the rivals not willing to accept the results of the election made both of them announce and be sworn as President at the same time in Kabul. The controversy over the result of the elections led both candidates to claim victory as presidents in a single day.

Emma Graham-Harrison, Guardian Journalist, tweeted, “Last Afghan poll so marred by fraud and insecurity there was no official result for 5 months. Disputes that followed meant two rival candidates both claimed victory and organized parallel inaugurations.”

This year, the Afghanistan Presidential election became controversial as two rivals inauguration ceremonies were held in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul. Eventually, after many Zalmai Khalilzad, the US special envoy for Afghanistan, with the former 2014 rivals, visited Afghanistan. The two rivals signed a political accord, that sees Abdullah Abdullah as the Chairman of the Higher Peace Council, and Ashraf Ghani as the President. They now share the power by 50/50 between the two sides, as they did in 2014.
