Chief Election Commissioner Announces Poll Dates For Four States And One UT

Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry shall have a single-phase poll whereas Assam and West Bengal shall have three phases and eight phases respectively

INDIA. New Delhi: The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India has announced the dates of the Assembly election 2021 for Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry today. Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry shall have a single-phase poll whereas Assam and West Bengal shall have three phases and eight phases respectively. The counting of votes for all assembly elections will take place on May 2.

The CEC, Sunil Arora has praised the efforts of the frontline health workers and the poll officers during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also lauded the people of Bihar for their faith in the EC and coming out to vote in large numbers in the 2020 assembly elections. A total of 18.68 crore voters will cast their votes in the 824 seats in the above-mentioned four states and one Union Territory (UT) at 2.7 lakh polling stations.

EC has also announced an increase in voting time by one hour similar to the Bihar assembly polls. The expenditure limit for Puducherry and four states will be Rs. 22 lakh ($29,838) and Rs.30.8 lakh ($42,055) per constituency respectively.

In WB, the polls will have 8 phases, from March 27 in the first phase to April 29 in the eighth and final phase. The state has 294 assembly seats and has 1,01,916 polling stations.

In Assam, there will be a three-phase election. This will commence on March 27 and finish on April 6. Assam has 126 assembly seats and 33,530 polling stations. On the other hand, Tamil Nadu has a single-phase election and has 234 assembly seats with 88,936 polling stations. The polling date for Tamil Nadu is April 6.

Along with Tamil Nadu, Kerala’s election will also start on April 6. Kerala has 140 seats and 40,771 polling stations. The UT Puducherry has 30 assembly seats and 1559 polling stations. The election date is also April 6. Puducherry is currently under the President’s Rule with the dissolution of the assembly. The ruling Congress party came short of the majority on the Vidhan Sabha floor.
