GHANA. Accra: The Supreme Court in Ghana has today confirmed the victory of incumbent president Nana Akufo Ado as the winner in last year’s poll.

Former president John Mahama who stood on an opposition National Democratic Congress filed a petition to have the election result nullified.

But a panel of seven judges led by Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah argued that the petitioners did not satisfy the five issues needed for a nullification.

Mahama and Ado have been heavy contenders in previous elections over decades.

In 2012 Mahama won the presidency with 50.7 percent of the votes. Ado contested the results and was rejected by the courts.

In 2016 Ado won by 53.8 percent of the votes making him president.

International observers declared the 2020 elections as calm. But police say five people were killed during voting and counting day.

Malawi and Kenya remains the only African countries in which an incumbent president’s election was nullified by a Supreme Court.
