Campaigns To Promote Tourism In the North Eastern Region Of India

The North Eastern Region popularly called the Seven Sister states in India, is gifted with diverse tourist attractions with distinct features.

INDIA: The North Eastern Region (NER), popularly called the Seven Sister states in India comprising of eight states – Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim, is gifted with diverse tourist attractions with each State having its own distinct features. Yes, its called seven sister states as Sikkim is not counted as one of the seven sisters because it does not share borders with any of the other seven states, and is referred as the brother of the seven sisters.

The Ministry of Tourism carries out regular promotional campaigns and events to showcase the unique tourism products and sights of this beautiful region to the potential travelers under ‘Dekho Apna Desh’ initiative. In this backdrop, India Tourism, Guwahati has organised an event “1000 Bar Dekho- North East Dekho” under the tag line of Dekho Apna Desh and Fit india from 7th -17th March 2021. A cycling event has been organised in which Sanjay Bahadur, a solo cyclist will cover 1000 kms cycling all across the Assam. Many other Cultural events and Instalive shows to promote the lesser known destinations of all 7 states of North-Eastern region  and Sikkim are also planned.

Ministry of Tourism in the North Eastern region also organises International Tourism Mart (ITM), an annual event with the objective of highlighting the tourism potential of the region in the domestic and international Market. Since the year 2013, so far, a total of 8 Editions of ITMs have been held in various states of the North Eastern Region.

As a promotional activity under Dekho Apna Desh campaign, the Ministry of Tourism is also conducting webinars since April 2020, on various tourism products and a few of these webinars were dedicated to North East Region. Today’s webinar is going to focus on the cuisines of North East Region. Attempts are made to identify new destinations and places to create awareness, organise workshops/seminars for providing necessary skills, and provide income sources for the locals.

Special schemes by the Ministry of Tourism are launched with special emphasis on the development and promotion of tourism for North Eastern States, like Swadesh Darshan, Prashad etc. for development of a particular site / destination, and providing financial assistance, assistance for development of tourist infrastructure, promotion of fairs / festivals, tourism related events in the region, publicity campaigns etc. Various media platforms, such as Digital, Print and Social Media are engaged to promote tourism to the North Eastern Region. A committee of stakeholders active in NER ahs been formed for promoting North Eastern Region more aggressively by identifying new destinations, developing itineraries around them, identifying the places where events can be organised to create awareness, organise workshops/ seminars for the local stakeholders in terms of providing them necessary skills.

UDAN, i.e. Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik, is a Regional Connectivity Scheme of (RCS) Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India, whose primary objective is to facilitate/stimulate regional air connectivity by making it affordable. This scheme in association with Ministry of Tourism helps in augmenting tourism infrastructure by connecting a destination with tourists from all over the country. A total number of 46 tourism routes under RCS-UDAN 3.0 and 78 routes under RCS UDAN -4 has been proposed.
