Things You Should Know Before Watching Marvel’s Black Widow

This much-awaited Marvel flick, numerously delayed due to the scourge of pandemic is finally set to release on July 9, 2021, in theatres and Disney+Hotstar. Assumed to be a visual treat for the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) fans, might represent the past of the deadliest Red Room Assassin. A quick glimpse of the character arc would be perfect to enhance the experience of the movie.

Origin of Black Widow:

Natalia Alianovna “Natasha” Romanoff, also known as Black Widow is a master class assassin turned S.H.I.E.L.D (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division) agent and later became one of the founding members of the Avengers. Originally appearing on the pages of comics in Tales of Suspense #52 (April 1964). Since the Avengers: Age of Ultron fans have been curious about her past, where ‘The Red Room’ scene acts as a catalyst for the viewers.

It’s a prequel set between the storyline of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. 

Natasha’s journey will link her with surrogate family members Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) and Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Hannah Weisz) along with Alexei Shostakov a.k.a Red Guardian (David Harbour). Alexei Shostakov and Melina Vostokoff will act as father and mother figures to both Natasha and Yelena.

 The Red Guardian is considered to be a Soviet Union’s reply to Captain America, which first appeared in Avengers comic #43 (1967). Melina Vostokoff a.k.a Iron Maiden who made her debut in 1983’s Marvel Fanfare #11 had a great rival history with Black Widow. It has been theorized by many fans that at the end of the story Melina will take on the mantle of Iron Maiden.

Yelena Belova, who graduated from the Red Room was eager to take on the mantle of the Black widow which was first introduced in comic Inhuman #5 (1999). Similarly in the movie the character will be fixed as a supporting sister to Natasha which later gains the title of Black Widow.

Who’s the enemy?

The Avengers leave the fans behind with certain question which includes the interrogation of Loki by Natasha, in which he says “can you wipe out that much red? Dreykov’s daughter? In comics Dreykov(Raymond Winstone) has been a mastermind behind the notorious Red Room. This conversation points towards Dreykov’s and Natasha’s horrific past. It is also confirmed that he will ally with Taskmaster to achieve his evil goals.

Taskmaster: the copy assassin, with his primary appearance in Marvel Comics The Avengers #195 became a fan favorite. A former S.H.I.E.L.D agent turned into master class tactician with the help of the Nazi version of super-soldier serum. Marvel Studios is popularly known for executing a different take on the characters regarding its movie. Thus, this version of Taskmaster will be someone known from Natasha’s past. The powers of Taskmaster include muscle memory and reflexive tasks, which can be seen in trailers. 

Some known faces.

The trailer shows a young Thaddeus Ross (William Hurt) who would deal with post Sokovia accords crisis on Black Widow. It’s been predicted that General Ross will form a group of villain turned anti-hero known as Thunderbolts. It is confirmed by Marvel Studios that Thunderbolts are coming to Disney+.

Since 2019 it’s been heavily hinted that Tony Stark a.k.a Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) will have a cameo in the movie.
