AUSTRIA. Spielberg: The final race at Formula 1 BWT Grosser Preis Der Steiermark 2021 popularly known as Styrian Grand Prix witnessed today a magnificent battle largely between Red Bull and Mercedes. Red Bull driver Max Verstappen was in an unbeatable form after taking Pole yesterday. He remained consistent and maintained that lead throughout the race. Lewis Hamilton gave a close fight throughout and secured second position with his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas taking third position. Red Bull’s Sergio Pérez was fourth and McLaren’s Lando Norris secured fifth position in the race. Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc were sixth and seventh for Ferrari. Lance Stroll finished in eighth for Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso in ninth for Alpine and Yuki Tsunoda in 10th for AlphaTauri.
With this win, Verstappen had won three times at the Red Bull Ring. This is also his fourth victory of this season and second consecutive win in a row. In Championship score, he was leading by 12 points prior to this race but now the gap advanced to 18 points from his nearest competitor. Red Bull now leads Mercedes by 40 points in the constructors’ championship.
The new Red Bull Ring
The renovated Red Bull Ring racetrack reopened in May 2011 after homologized by FIA as “Grade A”. A special feature of this racetrack designed by circuit designer Hermann Tilke is the difference in altitude i.e. a maximum uphill slope of 12 % and a maximum downhill slope of 9.3 %. Formula One returned to the circuit in the 2014.
