US, UK Ask Citizens to Leave Hotels in Kabul Due to Security Threats

Both the governments have asked their citizens to not stay at the Serena Hotel

AFGHANISTAN: The United Kingdom and the United States warned their citizens to stay away from hotels in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul on Monday due to “security threats”.

The governments have asked their citizens to not stay at the Serena Hotel. Serena Hotel is situated in the heart of Kabul, the epicenter of social, commercial, and cultural life in Afghanistan, and is popular among foreign tourists.

“US citizens, who are at or near the Serena Hotel, should leave immediately,” the State Department said.

The UK Foreign Office also requested its citizens not to travel or stay in Afghanistan, especially in Kabul’s Serena Hotel.

An explosion at a mosque in Afghanistan’s Kunduz Province killed at least 50 people on Friday. The Islamic State-Khorasan in Afghanistan has claimed responsibility for the attack. Islamic State-Khorasan is an affiliate of the terrorist group ISIS.

The first in-person meeting since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in August was conducted on Sunday. Senior US officials and a Taliban delegation were part of this meeting in Doha. US State Department spokesperson Ned Price said that the talks in Doha were focused on concerns related to security, terrorism, and human rights. Meanwhile, the US has called the discussions “candid and professional”.

The representatives of the two countries also discussed safe passage for Americans, other foreign nationals, and Afghans.
