NIGERIA. NIGER: 38 persons of Government Science College, Kagara who were kidnapped by bandits have been released.
The kidnapped persons were released on Saturday morning at Rafi local government area of the state.
They were very tired and weary when they were released as they later told newsmen that they had trekked for hours after they were released.
Received by the Governor
Niger state Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello met with the released kidnapped victims after they had been refreshed and rested enough from the trauma they went through.
According to the Niger state Governor said that 38 of the abducted students, staff and families were released.
He said that the victims had gone through torture and one of them had to be admitted in the hospital because she was suffering from excessive exhaustion.
“We thank God they are back here with us peacefully, they have been medically checked and the medical team will monitor them for a few more days.
“They have been able to give a feel of what they went through and it is very unfortunate. They have been through tremendous torture from their captors. We are carefully watching their health and conditions and they will soon be back home with their families.”
A lot of the parents of the released abducted students have expressed worry over their inability to meet and talk with their children.
The children were not been allowed to meet with their parents because medical personnel said they were weak and vulnerable and needed to be attended to medically.
Some of the parents also said that they will not not allow their children and wards return back to the school they were abducted from.
The parents are waiting anxiously to reunite with their children who are under serious medical scrutiny by the government medical team
How they were released
The abducted victims were released in the early hours of Saturday morning in a remote part of Niger state after a long negotiation with the bandits.
The released victims were said to have trekked for hours before they were picked up by government negotiation team and brought to the Niger state Capital, Minna.
The Secretary to the Niger state government, Ahmed Matane said that the governnent had to track the students to ensure that they did nit enter into the hands of another set of bandits.
How they were kidnapped
The released abductees were kidnapped on the 17th of February, 2021 when bandits stormed the Government Science College Kagara.
24 students, 6 staff and 8 staff relatives were abducted from the College and a student, Benjamin Habila was shot dead at the school premises by the gunmen.
