Boxer Lovlina Borgohain Keep India’s Medal Hope Alive After Booking Semi-Final Berth

JAPAN: Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain defeated world champion Chen Nien-Chin of Chinese Taipei 4-1, to book her place in the semifinals. The 69 kg India boxer assured India a medal in boxing at the Tokyo Olympics on Friday. Lovlina will now face Turkey’s Busenaz Surmeneli in her semi-final bout on August 4.

Earlier, Lovlina beat German boxer Nadine Apetz in a close fight to win her first Olympic match. She defeated Nadine 3-2 in the round of 32 matches on July 27.

Lovlina’s biggest career breakthrough was her selection in the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Interestingly, was not given any official intimation regarding her selection in the Commonwealth Games. She found out about her selection through the media reports. Amid all the controversies, Lovlina reached the quarter-finals in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

In June 2018, Lovlina clinched a silver medal at the Ulaanbaatar Cup in Mongolia. In the same year, also won a bronze medal at the 13th International Silesian Championship in Poland.

Last year, in March 2020, Lovlina secured the Olympic berth in the 69-kg by defeating Uzbekistan’s Maftuinakhon Melieva 5-0 in the 2020 Asia Oceania Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament. By booking her Olympic spot, she became the first-ever sportswomen from Assam to qualify for the Olympics.
