India All Set To End The Fourth Phase Of COVID-19 Lockdown

The guidelines for Unlock 5.0 likely to be announced today

INDIA. India is gearing up to end the fourth phase of the COVID-19 lockdown. The fourth phase of COVID-19 lockdown is set to end on September 30 in India.

The Unlock 5.0 will begin from October 1. However, the Centre is yet to announce any guidelines for Unlock 5.0. Many new relaxations are expected in the next phase of unlock.

Government’s plans for Unlock 5.0

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi had a meeting with all the chief ministers (CMs) recently. During the meeting, he asked the CMs to take necessary steps to implement the idea of “micro containment zones”.

He also advised them to refrain from imposing lockdowns and curfews for one or two days a week. PM Modi has urged the CMs to reassess lockdowns in a way that curb the spread of COVID-19.

India is all set to enter the festive season from October. Therefore, the Centre is most likely to announce some relaxations and open up more activities for the public.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has already allowed the reopening of restaurants, malls, gyms and salons. However, it is expected that more activities will be allowed from October with proper social distancing.

The MHA had specified that states cannot impose lockdowns without consulting the Centre while issuing the guidelines for Unlock 4.

Cinema halls likely to reopen during Unlock 5.0

There are speculations that the Centre would allow the reopening of cinema halls from October 1. Information and Broadcasting Ministry Secretary, Amit Khare has suggested a proper sitting arrangement for movie theatres.


West Bengal has announced that cinema halls will be allowed to open from October 1. However, only 50 people will be allowed to sit inside the hall at a single time.


The tourism sector was affected the most due to COVID-19 pandemic. It is now believed that it may witness some recovery in October. India is all set to open their doors to travellers from different parts of the world.


Meanwhile, Universities and colleges have already started their admissions process. The new academic year is all set to start via online classes.
