Enola Holmes, the upcoming mystery film based on the book series of the same name by Nancy Springer, is releasing on Netflix on 23 September 2020. The film is directed by Harry Bradbeer and written by Jack Thorne. Millie Bobby Brown of Stranger Things fame stars as the title character. Sam Claflin, Henry Cavill, and Helena Bonham Carter appear in supporting roles.

Enola Holmes is a dynamic new mystery-adventure that introduces the world’s greatest detective to his fiercest competition yet: his teenage sister. When Sherlock Holmes’ teen sister Enola discovers her mother missing, she sets off to find her, becoming a super-sleuth in her own right as she outwits her famous brother and unravels a dangerous conspiracy around a mysterious young Lord.

Interestingly, the Conan Doyle Estate filed a lawsuit against Netflix over the film, arguing it violates copyright by depicting Sherlock Holmes as having emotions, an aspect of the character which they claim does not fall under the public domain as he was only described as having emotions in stories published between 1923 to 1927, and the copyright for the stories published in that period still belong to the estate. Back in 2014, the Doyle Estate lost most of its hold on Sherlock Holmes when it was ruled that all of the stories authored about the iconic fictional detective before 1923 were in the public domain.

Enola Holmes was initially supposed to have a theatrical release by Warner Bros. Pictures but in April 2020, Netflix acquired distribution rights to the film due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
