India: Based on the bestselling book series Fear Street (1989) by R. L. Stine, the movie executes subtle slasher vibes of the 90’s horror era. In the clutches of brutal slaying, the town is cursed by an ancient evil. It’s up to Deena Johnson (Kiana Madeira) and her friends to reveal the mystery of serial killings.

The story of Fear Street is set in the year 1994 as depicted in the title. In Fear Street viewers are introduced to a group of five teens and a town separated into two sections. One is Sunnyvale and the other is Shadyside. Sunnyvale is a perfect paradise, where the inhabitants live extremely well and education is good, or in other words, everything is in order. Shadyside’s history is bleak; something horrible always seems to happen, especially murders. No one knows the exact reason for the murders, a legend has developed around it. Many Shadyside teenagers think that this is the result of a curse placed on the town by Sarah Fier, who was hanged for witchcraft in 1666.

Deena doesn’t believe in this myth, her brother Josh (Benjamin Flores Jr) is an internet nerd. While Simon (Fred Hechinger) and Kate (Julia Rehwald), two of her buddies, are drug dealers. The cast is perfectly suited to their character. The proper expression of scared teenagers in the early 90’s slasher movies is recreated by the cast. From their facial expressions, viewers can feel something tragic is going to happen. But the absence of character development fails to connect the audience with their persona.

The cinematography effectively captures the dread and gore of the film. The murder scenarios involving the Skeleton Mask Killer strikes visual terror in the audience. The background score completely suits the brutality of the murder scenes. However, at times, the film loses its 90s slasher vibes and becomes more like a modern horror film.

The story is inspired by many popular slasher films like Halloween, Scream, Cabin in the woods, and Friday the 13th. The film strikes a mix between recent horror flicks and slasher films from the 1990s. Because of the bloodshed and violent scenes, the film is rated R. On July 9 and 16, two sequels to Part One named Part Two: 1978 and Part Three: 1666, will be released.
