Anti-Biden protestors tore down metal barricades at the bottom of the Capitol’s steps. Due to this, the US Capitol had to be locked down on Wednesday. Protesters tried to push past the police officers who held shields. Police were seen firing pepper spray into the crowd to keep them back even as the crowd shouted “traitors”. The protestors were also seen firing at the premises of the Capitol building.

After pleading from aides and congressional allies inside the Capitol building, President Trump released a taped video in which he urged his supporters to “go home”. As the clashes broke out, Trump appealed for peace. “Please support our Capitol Police and Law Enforcement. They are truly on the side of our Country. Stay peaceful!” he tweeted.

Earlier, the US House of Representatives and Senate had met in a rare joint session to begin considering the certification of Electoral College results, that showed Democrat Joe Biden defeating Trump.

Meanwhile, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham tweeted, “I prayed Joe Biden would lose. He won. He’s the legitimate president of the United States. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are lawfully elected and will become the president and vice president of the United States on January 20th.”
