Indian Coast Guard Evacuates Critically Injured Philippines National

INDIA. Mumbai: In a swift sea-air coordinated rescue operation, the Indian Coast Guard successfully evacuated a critically injured foreign national from merchant vessel MV Zim Atlantic 90 KM, off Mumbai on Friday.

Indian Coast Guard shared the news on Twitter

The tweet read, “In a swift sea-air co-ordinated operation, @IndiaCoastGuard ship Saksham evacuated critically injured foreign national from MV Zim Atlantic today. Patient airlifted & disembarked at #Juhu #Mumbai #Maharashtra airfield by #ICG Helicopter & handed over to agent for medicals.”

The official handle also shared a footage of the whole rescue scenario, where coast guard officials can be seen rescuing the critically injured foreign national.

The SOS call was received at Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre, Mumbai, at 0950 hrs from Liberian flagged Container Vessel MV Zim Atlantic for an emergency medical evacuation of 35 years old unconscious Filipino crew with a severe head injury.

Indian Coast Guard immediately swung into action, and Indian Coast Guard Ship “Saksham,” with a specialist medical team, was diverted for assistance. The ship promptly evacuated the patient and provided first aid under the supervision of a specialist medical team headed by the neurologist.

Further, considering the criticality of head injury, ICG Helicopter was launched from Mumbai, and the injured crew was airlifted within the shortest span of time. The patient was subsequently disembarked at Juhu airfield in North West Mumbai and handed over to the agent for further critical medical management, a Coast Guard statement read.

Zim Atlantic (IMO: 9440801) is a container ship sailing under the flag of Liberia and was heading for Jawaharlal Nehru Port at Nhava Sheva near Uran in Raigad district.

Indian Coast Guard is the National Coordinator for Search and Rescue in Indian Search and Rescue Region. The organization, with the motto ‘We Protect,’ provides timely assistance in the 4.6 Million Square kilometres of Sea Area around the country.
