UNITED KINGDOM. Silverstone: In a dramatic and nerve wrecking final race day of The British Grand Prix at Silverstone Circuit, Lewis Hamilton won his 99th title win. Hamilton clinched his 8th British GP after serving a 10 second penalty for an unfortunate collision in the first lap at copse corner with another title contender Max Verstappen. He then went ahead and dramatically overtook Charles Leclerc on Lap 50 of 52 to win the race in 1:58:23.284s
Beginning of the race
Earlier in the race, Hamilton was given a 10s penalty after a massive collision with fellow contender Max Verstappen that resulted in the later crashing out of the race. Verstappen was quickly taken to hospital for precautionary tests.
The race was red flagged for quite some time since it took time to clear all debris and repair the barrier. Verstappen hit the barriers at very high speed of around 180 mph after colliding with Hamilton during the first lap.
The world champion moved into first place on Lap 50 of 52 after chasing and overtaking Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc at the same Copse corner where he and Verstappen collided. With this win, Hamilton is now eight points behind Verstappen’s championship lead.
Charles Leclerc, who was leading almost till the end of the British Grand Prix, claimed his first podium of the season exactly 70 years after team Ferrari won its first Grand Prix title in 1951.
