Verstappen was running down the main straight when Hamilton exited the pits after his first stop and both of them were moving side by side towards the first corner. As they went through the corner, they collided with each other, lifting Verstappen onto the Mercedes and both ending up stuck in the gravel. They had to retire from the race.

The Stewards heard from both the drivers involved in the incident and the team Representatives too. After reviewing the video evidence they determined that Verstappen was predominantly to blame for the collision. He was handed a three-place grid penalty for the Russian Grand Prix plus two penalty points.
