UNITED KINGDOM. Glasgow, Hampden Park: Czech Republic’s Patrik Schick scored what football experts think surely be the Euro 2020 goal of the tournament in the Czech Republic’s 2-0 victory against Scotland on Monday. Both sides knew that three points at Hampden Park would be hugely significant in the battle to qualify for the last-16 after England had beaten Croatia in Group D on Sunday. It was the Bayer Leverkusen forward’s second goal of the game. The 25-year-old put the Czechs in the lead in the 42nd minute with a header. He then doubled his tally in the 52nd minute with an outrageous effort.

The best of Schick

The 52nd minute saw the Scotland defender Jack Hendry’s shot was blocked by a Czech player and the rebound rolled to Schick at the centerline. While he only had one defender to beat with a teammate arriving for support, the 25-year-old noticed that Scotland goalkeeper was off his line and decided to shoot from the long way out. In the post-match presentation, Schick said, “I saw him (the goalkeeper) off his line, I checked in the first half when this situation would come. I was checking where he was standing.”

He took a couple of touches before curling an effort from the halfway line to catch Scotland goalkeeper David Marshall off his line.

UEFA says it was the longest distance for a goal in the tournament at 49.7 meters. The previous record 38.6 meters came from Germany midfielder Torsten Frings at Euro 2004.

He became the first Czech player since Tomáš Rosický at the 2006 FIFA World Cup to score a brace at a major tournament and the first since Milan Baroš in 2004 to do so at the European Championships. Schick is a tall and physically strong yet elegant left-footed forward, with an eye always for goal.
