INDIA: Following the virality of a controversial clip on social media, the Dalai Lama issues an apology via his social media handles.

An enraged series of backlashes took place online as the 87-year-old spiritual leader from Tibet, Dalai Lama, asked a minor to “suck his tongue” at an event. The boy first asked Lama if he could hug him.

The Dalai Lama then kissed the minor on his lips before asking him to “suck his tongue”. The minor hesitated when Lama protruded his tongue out. Lama then said, “thank you”, and shook the boy’s hand.

He told the little boy before giving him another hug, “Now you should look for good human beings who create peace and happiness, and you should not follow those human beings that are killing other people.”

Dalai Lama’s social media handle posted a video of the conversation with the boy that said, “During his meeting with students and members of M3M Foundation at the courtyard of Thekchen Choeling Tsuglakhang, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama advised a young Indian boy to look up to a good human being who always works to cultivate peace and happiness in the world.”

Dalai Lama’s official Twitter account issued an apology statement. The statement read, “A video clip has been circulating that shows a recent meeting when a young boy asked His Holiness the Dalai Lama if he could give him a hug.”

“His Holiness wishes to apologize to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused. His Holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras. He regrets the incident,” the statement read.

A lot of people appeared to find this act repulsive. Several people claimed it was utterly dishonourable for a spiritual leader to commit such conduct.

In 2019, the Tibetan spiritual leader sparked controversy when he said, “If a female Dalai Lama comes she should be more attractive.” He later issued an apology statement.
