INDIA: Trinamool Congress Leader Akhil Giri was wrapped into controversy after his objectionable remarks about President Draupadi Murmu went viral on social media. Giri, during a public gathering, said, “We don’t judge people based on their appearance, and we respect the president’s office… How does our president look?”

The TMC party distanced itself from Akhil Giri’s remarks

TMC spokesman Saket Gokhale took to Twitter and wrote, “This is an irresponsible comment & does NOT represent the views of @AITCofficial. We are extremely proud of the President of India & hold her & her office in the highest regard.”

Meanwhile, the Minister for Correctional Administration sought an apology for his statement and clarified, saying, “For the last few months, Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Suvendu Adhikari has been making derogatory remarks about me which had made me angry.”

Giri released an apology video on Twitter. The TMC leader stated to the media, “I had no intention of disrespecting the Honorable President. I was responding to what BJP leaders were saying as they verbally attacked me. Every day, I get verbally abused because of my appearance. It is incorrect to believe that I have disrespected the President. I regret making such a comment. I have a great respect for our country’s President.”
