INDIA. Mumbai: An alcoholic was arrested on charges of making a hoax call to the Mumbai police control room about a bomb blast at the Hotel Grand Hyatt located at Santacruz East in North West Mumbai and was remanded to police custody on Friday.

Suraj Chavan (34) was apprehended after the police tracked the location of his phone to Kalina in Santacruz with the assistance of the Cyber police.

The Mumbai Police’s main control room received a call from an unidentified person around 8:49 pm on Thursday, warning them about a probable bomb explosion at the upscale Grand Hyatt located nearby.

When the police traced the call and booked the man, he said he had dialled them under the influence of alcohol. He was then taken into custody by the Vakola Police Station for the hoax call and booked under relevant sections of the IPC.

The police found that he was an addict. The police also noted that the accused was booked for a similar crime earlier too, for giving false information about blowing up the Mumbai University for which he was arrested.

Similarly, on October 18, around 10:45 pm, the Navi Mumbai Police’s 112 helpline received a call about bomb blasts at Infiniti Mall in Andheri West, PVR Mall in Juhu, and the Sahara Hotel in Vile Parle East.

The caller had claimed that he was speaking from the CBI’s Goa office and that his name was Aryan Singhania. The information was passed on to the Mumbai Police.

Police teams along with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) inspected the places but found nothing.

An FIR against an unidentified person was registered at Azad Maidan police in South Mumbai under Indian Penal Code section 505 (statements/rumours conducted to cause public mischief) and the case was transferred to Turbhe Police for further investigation.

Officials of the Mumbai Police said that hoax calls are being made mischievously with the aim of creating fear and that this type of situation does not exist in Mumbai. They said all security measures are in place and the metropolis is under surveillance.
