INS Tarkash Participates in “IBSAMAR VII” in South Africa

INDIA. Mumbai: INS Tarkash participated in the seventh edition of IBSAMAR, a joint multinational maritime exercise conducted around Port Grequhrea (also known as Port Elizabeth) in South Africa, along with Brazilian and South African Navies from Monday through Wednesday.

The Indian Navy was represented by the Teg class guided missile frigate, INS Tarkash, a Chetak helicopter and the personnel from the Marine Commando Force (MARCOS).

The harbour phase of IBSAMAR VII included professional exchanges such as damage control and fire-fighting drills, VBSS/cross-boarding lectures and interaction among special forces, an Indian Navy statement read.

The Joint Maritime Exercise strengthens maritime security, joint operational training, sharing of best practices and building interoperability to address common maritime threats.

The previous edition of IBSAMAR (IBSAMAR VI) was conducted in Simons Town, South Africa, in October 2018.

In another development, the Indian Navy evacuated an Iranian Navy officer who suffered a cardiac arrest on board an Iranian vessel Makaran, off the Mumbai coast on Wednesday.

An Indian Navy Advanced Light Helicopter was launched from INS Shikra in South Mumbai at about 0830 am in response to a request from the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy for MEDEVAC (emergency removal of sick or injured people from an area especially by helicopterof an Iranian Navy personnel. The aircraft evacuated the patient along with two attendants from the ship and airlifted them directly to the Navy hospital, INHS Asvini.

Helicopter malfunctions

In yet another development, A MiG 29K on a routine sortie over the sea off Goa developed a technical malfunction while returning to base on Wednesday. The pilot safely ejected and was recovered during a quick search and rescue operation. The pilot is said to be in good health. A Board of Inquiry (BOI) has been appointed to investigate the incident’s cause.
