Maritime History Society’s 44th Founder Day Celebrated in Mumbai

The guest speaker underlined the significance of Indian ports in her speech

INDIA. Mumbai: Last week, on the 44th Founder Day of the Maritime History Society, a Commemorative Lecture on the theme “India’s Sea Power and Conflict between the 16th and 18th Centuries” was held at Navy Nagar, Colaba in South Mumbai.

Commodore Aasheesh Khanna, Director of the Maritime History Society (MSH), gave the opening address, followed by a thematic presentation by Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Chief of Staff, Western Naval Command, and Chairman MHS.

Dr. Ruby Maloni, former Professor and Head, Department of History, University of Mumbai, spoke at the event and discussed the importance of Indian ports in shaping India’s economic and maritime history in her talk titled ‘Windows to the Ocean: Indian Ports with their Foreland and Hinterland (16th to 18th Centuries).’

MHS Senior Research Associate Janhavi Lokegaonkar proposed the vote of thanks.

This was MHS’s first offline event following the pandemic, and it drew a considerable number of naval personnel and nautical enthusiasts.

On May 12, 1978, late Vice Admiral MP Awati established the MHS. Since then, the Society has held a commemorative talk every year to celebrate the occasion.

International nurses day

In other news, the International Nurses Day was observed at INHS Asvini (Asvini Hospital) in Colaba, South Mumbai, on May 12, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the originator of modern nursing.

Several events were held for a week to honour the subject “Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Invest in Nursing and Respect Rights to Secure Global Health,” chosen this year.

Quiz competition and interactive health talks at OPDs of various departments – pediatrics, gynae and obstetrics, oncology, medicine, and psychiatry – were conducted. A symposium was also organized, during which papers on current issues in nursing were presented. 

Surgeon Rear Admiral Anupam Kapoor, Commanding Officer INHS Asvini, was the event’s, Chief Guest. 

She thanked the Military Nursing Service (MNS) officers for their essential services and encouraged them to keep doing so, emulating Florence Nightingale’s outstanding altruistic principles.
