Indian PM Narendra Modi Visits Tokyo to Attend Shinzo Abe’s Funeral

JAPAN: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi went all the way to Tokyo to pay his respects to former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The former Prime Minister, who died on July 8, was shot dead while making a campaign speech in the southern Japanese city of Nara.

Shinzo Abe was the longest-serving leader in the Japanese government. The state organised a grand funeral to say adieu to the leader and, according to reports, nearly 12 million dollars will be shelled out for the funeral, which is being sponsored by taxpayers’ money.

Meanwhile, Indian PM Narendra Modi will join several overseas leaders to pay tribute to Shinzo. As per reports, about 100 countries, including 20 heads of state and government, are expected to attend Abe’s funeral.

India had a good relationship with Japan during the rule of former PM Abe, and now it’s grown stronger over time. The former minister reshaped Japan’s foreign policy. The Indian PM, Modi, took to his Twitter to inform the world about his arrival in Tokyo. He wrote, “Landed in Tokyo”.

Before that, he wrote on Twitter, “I am travelling to Tokyo tonight to participate in the State Funeral of former PM Shinzo Abe, a dear friend and a great champion of India-Japan friendship. I will be conveying heartfelt condolences to Prime Minister Kishida and Mrs. Abe on behalf of all Indians. We will continue working to further strengthen India-Japan relations as envisioned by Abe San. @kishida230.”

Arindam Bagchi, a spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry, tweeted, “PM @ Narendra Modi arrives in Tokyo.” Will participate in the state funeral of former PM Shinzo Abe later today. I will also hold a bilateral meeting with PM @kishida230, reaffirming my commitment to further strengthening the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.”

In the recent past, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra during a media interview confirmed, “The visit will be an opportunity for PM Modi to honour the memory of former PM Abe, who he considered a dear friend and a great champion of India-Japan ties.”
