SOLOMON ISLANDS: A powerful earthquake of 7.0 magnitude struck the Solomon Islands on Tuesday. According to the eyewitnesses, the earthquake caused violent shaking that threw televisions and other goods to the ground.

A tsunami warning had been issued for a portion of the Solomon Islands coast within 300 kilometres (185 miles) of the epicentre. However, the Pacific Warning Center later stated that the tsunami threat from the Solomon Islands earthquake has “mostly gone.”

Joy Nisha, a receptionist at the Heritage Park Hotel in Honiara, the country’s capital, told reporters, “This was a big one. The hotel has some broken items. Everyone appears to be OK, but anxious.”

The shaking reportedly lasted for almost 20 seconds, according to multiple sources.

People were leaving their offices and escaping to higher ground because there was no power in several parts of the city.

On Monday, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake shook Indonesia. At least 20 people were killed and 300 were injured when the earthquake struck Java, the largest island in Indonesia.

In West Java, the epicentre was close to the town of Cianjur. Buildings were reportedly destroyed after a shallow 5.6-magnitude earthquake that shook Indonesia’s Java island. The earthquake shook highrises in Jakarta’s capital as well.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) explained that there are additional significant aspects to take into account besides earthquake magnitude, which is one component that influences the creation of tsunamis. It must be a shallow maritime earthquake that moves the seafloor.

Although modest tsunamis have occasionally been produced by major (i.e., > M8) strike-slip earthquakes, thrust earthquakes (as opposed to strike-slip) are significantly more likely to cause them.
