  • Tuesday night’s shooting at a baseball game in a Chicago park left one person dead and at least seven others injured.
  • Around 8 o’clock local time, gunshots broke out.
  • The presence of a suspect in police custody is unknown.

The incident happened on the north end of the park, close to 51st Street and Champlain Avenue, as CBS 2’s Vermont Terry reported.

Police were called to the park at 7:46 p.m., according to Area One Chicago Police Deputy Chief Fred Melean. There was a shootout as a result of a dispute between two parties, and seven persons were injured.

With flashlights, police were spotted scouring the grass next to a baseball diamond for shell casings. When the guns rang out, there were a fair number of people in the park, and many were caught off guard.

Those who were caught in the crossfire may be seen on video lying still on the ground.

Tents have been set up in Washington Park in anticipation of the UniverSoul Circus’ upcoming run, but the circus has not yet begun and was not present Tuesday night.

Melean claimed that while the circus is running, there is more security present in the park than there was on Tuesday night.

Witnesses reported hearing over 30 gunshots fired swiftly, which made them hide.“It’s just a terrible time that many will make political, Pastor Donovan Price, an activist, said on a night when people ought to be having fun because the weather is great and all, but regrettably, this is people’s lives. It is not a staged political event.”

One woman and three males, according to the Fire Department, were transported by ambulance. One person’s condition ranged from good to serious, while the others ranged from serious to critically ill.

Many victims, according to the police, were transferred to the University of Chicago Medical Center. As of late Tuesday, no one was in custody and police lacked a motive for the shooting.

Melean urged any witnesses to come forward and get in touch with the investigators in Area One. He stated that tips can also be left anonymously at (833) 408-0069.
