INDIA. New Delhi: The former Prime Minister and President of the Republic of Mauritius, Sir Anerood Jugnauth passed away at the age of 91 on Thursday, June 03,2021. He was the country’s longest-serving prime minister with more than 18 years of tenure. He was considered the father of the Mauritian economic miracle of the 1980s.

Jugnauth held the post of Prime Minister between 1982 and 1995, then again between 2000 and 2003, and later between 2014 and 2017, before passing the torch to his son, Pravind Jugnauth, who is the current Prime Minister of Mauritius.

“Padma Vibhushan Sir Anerood Jugnauth, a tall leader & statesman, was the architect of modern Mauritius. A proud Pravasi Bharatiya, he helped forge the special bilateral relationship that will benefit from his legacy. Condolences to his family & the people of Mauritius. Om Shanti”, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi tweeted.

The External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar condoled the demise of Anerood Jugnauth.”Deeply grieved to learn about the passing away of Sir Anerood Jugnauth, former President & Prime Minister of Mauritius. A towering leader and a special friend of India. Still recall his warmth and graciousness the last time I called on him,” Jaishankar tweeted.

Coming from a family of Indian origin, he was born at the Cave in Vacoas on March 29, 1930. He studied at La Palma Elementary School and High School at Regent College and New Eton College. A lawyer by training, he worked in 1951 in the Department of Justice. In 1964 he was elected to the municipal council of his village, La Palma.
