NIGERIA. Osun. In a bid to address the rising demand for personal protective equipment and WASH materials by medical personnel,  the Global Adolescent Health and Development Initiative (GAHDI) has distributed 440 medical face masks and other WASH materials to three health facilities in Osun state in South-Western Nigeria.

Protective materials will reduce spread of Covid-19.
The materials, according to the initiative, would also reduce local transmission and spread of COVID-19 in Osun state. The health facilities include the Aderemi Public Health Centre in Ile-Ife, Enuwa Primary Health care in Ile-Ife, and Osun State Hospital in Oshogbo. The PPE and WASH materials distributed include 440 face masks, forty 500mls of handwash, forty-four 500mls alcohol-based sanitizers, eight 60 liters buckets with lid and tap, and over 100 educative posters.

The Team Lead, Dr. Ayilola Babatunde, said that the Global Adolescent Health and Development Initiative was concerned with the rate at which medical personnel, especially doctors and nurses, may get infected with the coronavirus.

He believes if transmission among medical personnel is reduced, it would also reduce local transmission of the virus. “The materials donated to these health facilities include facemasks, alcohol-based hand sanitizers, hand washes, face shields, 60 liter buckets with lids and taps. We designed, printed, and pasted posters with necessary information about COVID-19 and how to prevent its spread in English and Yoruba languages.”

“These posters were posted at strategic locations around the hospital’s entrance, the accident and emergency sections, and other points of the first contact within these Health care facilities”, Babatunde said.
