INDIA: The Indian government had issued legal rules to social media giants Facebook, Twitter, and others around three months ago. The deadline is ending on May 26 that will threaten the operations of Facebook and Twitter in India. The platforms has been saying that they will await instructions from their company headquarters in the US.

According to the reports, these social media platforms were required to abide by the rules notified in the Gazette of India on February 25. The government’s rules will come into effect from May 26.

“If social media companies do not obey the rules, they may lose their status and protections as intermediaries and may become liable for criminal action as per the existing laws of India,” official sources said.

On Monday, the Delhi Police Special Cell reached the offices of Twitter India in Delhi’s Lado Sarai and Gurugram to “serve notice” in the alleged Congress ‘Toolkit’ case wherein certain tweets by BJP leaders were flagged as having “manipulated media”.

According to the reports, the oversight mechanism will include a committee with representatives from Defense Ministry, External Affairs, Home, I&B, Law, IT and Women and Child Development.

Meanwhile, the failure of social media companies to make these changes in the past three months has not gone down well with the Indian government.
