UNITED STATES: The United States posted a spectacular 7-2 victory over defending champion South Korea to reach the baseball finals at the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday. The U.S. team of prospects and released veterans, seeking the Americans’ second baseball gold medal and first since 2000, improved to 4-1 and will play Japan (5-0) on Saturday night.

Professional baseball player Eddy Alvarez sat in the U.S. dugout after the final out and wept after the win even though his biggest game remained ahead. As Alvarez cried, his teammates Jack Lopez, Edwin Jackson, and Anthony Carter consoled him and exchanged handshakes and hugs.

Mighty Alvares

The 31-year-old speed skater-turned-second baseman became the third American to win medals at the Summer and Winter Olympics.

“I got emotional because it was a lot of sacrifices,” Alvarez said. “I still can’t believe it. I know the job’s not done yet because, at the end of the day, one of the only reasons why I came out here is for redemption, to win a gold medal.”
