YEMEN. Yemen is in a distressing situation as famine looms over the nation. Around 10 million children are facing starvation and their suffering is likely to get worse. Yemeni people are vulnerable to many diseases due to this situation. Severe malnutrition is threatening the lives of almost 400,000 children in Yemen.

Political conflicts and its effect on Yemen

Yemen has been facing war issues for a long time. The country has been wrecked by a conflict that has raged since 2014. There has been a battle between Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi’s administration and the Houthi armed movement form a long time. As a result, the battle affected the political and economical condition of Yemen. Both of the parties claim to have formed the official government of Yemen. The country has been torn apart due to this raging war.

Hadi’s government has been by an alliance of powerful countries headed by Saudi Arabia. The supporting countries include the UK, the US and the United Arab Emirates(UAE). However, Hadi had to to deal with many problems as a president.The problems included attacks by jihadists, unemployment and food insecurity.

The main fight started in 2014 when Houthi Shia Muslim movement took advantage of Hadi’s weakness. This conflict took a dramatic turn in March 2015 when Saudi Arabia and western countries began airstrikes against the Houthis. The main motive behind this was the restoring of Hadi’s government for the stability of Yemen. This political transition was intended to bring peace to Yemen.

The world is coming together to help Yemen

Yemen is considered one of the poorest countries in the world. Human Development Index(HDI) is a measure of life expectancy, health and education.The country currently ranks 168th out of 177 countries on the HDI.It has the lowest HDI rank compared to other Arab countries.

8.4 million Yemeni people are at risk of starvation.Almost 75 per cent of the people are in dire need of humanitarian aid. So, the United Nations and other NGOs are making efforts to help the people in Yemen. Saudi Arabia has announced a sum of $200 million for the UN aid. Countries like the UK, US and many western countries are coming forward to help Yemen.
