India Signs Six Pacts With Maldives, Announces $100 Million Line of Credit for the Nation

INDIA/MALDIVES: India and Maldives on Tuesday signed six agreements to deepen collaboration in several key areas. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that India has been and would continue to be the “first responder” to whatever needs or crises the island nation faces.

Following extensive discussions with the visiting president of the Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Modi announced a $100 million Line of Credit for the neighbouring nation to be used for the timely completion of development projects.

“We also reviewed projects for the construction of 4000 social housing units in Greater Male today,” PM Modi said in a statement.

“I am happy to announce that we will additionally provide financial support for 2,000 social housing units,” he added.

In order to ensure that all projects could be finished within a certain amount of time, he continued, “We have also chosen to grant an additional line of credit of $100 million.”

According to the prime minister, the Indian Ocean faces a major threat from international crime, terrorism, and drug trafficking, and strong ties between India and the Maldives are essential for maintaining peace in the entire region.

He claimed that in addition to serving the interests of the people of both countries, the India-Maldives alliance is also contributing to the peace and stability of the entire region.

PM Modi said that India has been and will continue to be the first responder to any need or crisis of Maldives.

The six agreements signed by the two parties will make it easier for them to work together on disaster preparedness, housing, cyber security, and infrastructure development in the Maldives.

PM Modi claimed that despite the difficulties brought on by the COVID-19 epidemic, the two nations’ cooperation is evolving into a substantial alliance.

According to Solih’s remarks, all parties reaffirmed their steadfast commitment to combating the menace of terrorism.

“Maldives will remain a true friend of India…Our relations with India will always be of highest priority,” he said.
