AIIMS Delhi Under Scrutiny After Journalist Alleges Critical Delay in Mother’s Emergency Care

Family claims terminal cancer patient waited hours for intervention while hospital has not issued a response

INDIA: In a deeply distressing account that has triggered widespread discussion online, award-winning journalist and National Film Awards jury member Murtaza Ali Khan has alleged that his critically ill mother was left in severe pain for several hours inside the Emergency Department of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, despite repeated pleas from family members for urgent medical attention.

Khan, a cultural commentator and media historian with more than fifteen years of experience covering India’s arts and cinema landscape, described the episode as a “night of helplessness, humiliation, and emotional devastation” in a detailed public statement shared online.

Allegations of delayed emergency response

According to Khan, his mother, who is undergoing treatment for advanced tongue and stomach cancer with metastasis, was brought to AIIMS in a critical condition following severe post chemotherapy toxicity. The family alleges that despite the severity of her condition, immediate intervention did not take place upon arrival.

Instead, Khan claims the patient remained in visible distress for hours as the night progressed, while family members continued to seek urgent assistance inside the emergency ward. The account describes an atmosphere of escalating anxiety, with relatives alleging that their repeated requests for help did not result in timely medical response.

Claim of confrontation inside emergency ward

Khan further alleges that when he attempted to communicate the urgency of his mother’s condition, the situation escalated into a confrontation with hospital security personnel. He claims he was removed from the emergency area, while his mother remained inside in critical condition.

“For any son watching his critically ill mother suffer, such moments are impossible to forget,” Khan stated in his account.

The family says the experience added to their distress during what they describe as an already overwhelming medical emergency.

Hours of waiting before intervention

Khan’s account also claims that his elderly aunt spent extended hours appealing to hospital staff on humanitarian grounds while the patient’s condition continued to deteriorate through the night.

According to the family, meaningful medical intervention reportedly began only around 6 AM, after what they describe as seven to eight hours of waiting inside the emergency department.

The allegations have raised broader concerns online about responsiveness in high pressure emergency settings and the emotional strain faced by families navigating public healthcare systems.

Questions over patient dignity and emergency care

While acknowledging the pressures faced by doctors and healthcare workers in overcrowded government hospitals, Khan argued in his statement that systemic strain should not translate into what patients perceive as neglect or loss of dignity.

He also pointed to a deeper concern shared by many citizens regarding access and responsiveness in critical situations, suggesting that public trust in emergency care systems is increasingly fragile.

“What families seek is not privilege,” he wrote. “They seek dignity, communication, and reassurance that their loved one’s life matters.”

Wider debate and official response awaited

The incident has reignited debate on patient rights, emergency protocols, and accountability within India’s public healthcare infrastructure, particularly in high volume institutions such as AIIMS Delhi. At the time of publication, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi has not issued an official statement addressing the allegations made by Murtaza Ali Khan or his family.
