INDIA: A protest march led by Amar Gondane, General Secretary of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Scheduled Castes (SC) Wing, was organised in Warora on Tuesday, with students and Congress workers demanding the immediate restoration of scholarships for students pursuing professional courses.
The agitation focused on the reported discontinuation of scholarships for students enrolled in courses such as engineering, pharmacy and nursing. Protesters urged the Maharashtra Government to reconsider its decision, warning that the withdrawal of financial support could create serious difficulties for students from SC and ST communities and affect their ability to continue higher education.

Gondane emerged as a key voice in the protest, calling for immediate government intervention to protect the educational interests of students who depend on scholarships and other financial assistance to pursue professional studies.
Demand for Immediate Restoration
Addressing the issue, Gondane demanded that the government withdraw its decision to discontinue scholarships and restore the benefits at the earliest. He emphasised the importance of scholarships in helping students meet the financial demands associated with professional education.
The protesters maintained that stopping scholarships could push a large number of students into financial distress. For students pursuing courses that often involve substantial tuition fees and other educational expenses, the availability of government assistance can play an important role in enabling them to complete their studies.
The Warora protest therefore sought not only the restoration of scholarships but also the timely release of educational benefits to eligible students.
Focus on SC and ST Students
Another major demand raised during the agitation was to ensure that SC and ST students receive the benefits of various educational schemes within the stipulated time.
According to the demands raised during the protest, delays in the disbursement of financial assistance can create additional pressure on students and their families. The protesters called for a more timely and reliable mechanism for releasing scholarships, maintenance allowances and other benefits.
Gondane and the protesters also highlighted the need to continue several educational support programmes designed to help students pursue higher education and professional opportunities.
These included programmes associated with the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Research and Training Institute (BARTI), particularly overseas education scholarships, PhD fellowships and competitive examination training.
The protesters also demanded the continuation of scholarships and maintenance allowances for ST students.
Gondane Warns of Larger Agitation
The protest march was organised under the leadership of the Congress SC Wing and saw participation from Congress office-bearers, party workers and students.
Gondane demanded that the state government take immediate steps to address the concerns raised by students. He warned that failure to act on the demands could result in a larger movement.
According to the protest leaders, an intense agitation would be launched at Samvidhan Chowk in Nagpur if the demands were not met immediately.
The warning signals that the scholarship issue could become a wider point of mobilisation if the government does not respond to the concerns raised by students and their representatives.
Memorandum Submitted to Chief Minister
As part of the protest, a memorandum outlining the demands was submitted to the Chief Minister through the Tehsildar.
The memorandum called for the withdrawal of the decision to stop scholarships and sought the restoration of financial support for eligible students. It also raised the issue of timely disbursement of educational benefits and continued access to various scholarship and training programmes.
The protest comes amid growing concerns among students over the impact that interruptions in scholarship support could have on their education.
For Gondane, the issue extends beyond financial assistance and concerns the ability of students from SC and ST communities to pursue professional and higher education without being forced to abandon their studies because of financial constraints.
A Call to Protect Educational Opportunities
The Warora agitation placed the scholarship issue firmly in the spotlight, with Gondane leading the demand for government action.
The protesters argued that educational schemes and scholarships should reach eligible beneficiaries without unnecessary delays or interruptions. They also stressed the importance of maintaining support for students pursuing professional courses and advanced academic programmes.
With the memorandum now submitted to the Chief Minister through the local administration, attention turns to the government’s response.
Gondane’s warning of a larger protest in Nagpur indicates that the issue may not end with the Warora demonstration. If the demands remain unresolved, the Congress SC Wing and participating students have indicated their intention to intensify the agitation.
The Warora protest thus marks a renewed push for the restoration of scholarships and educational assistance, with Amar Gondane at the forefront of the campaign demanding that financial support for SC and ST students be protected and delivered on time.
