GERMANY: Robert Lewandowski scored his 41st Bundesliga goal at the penultimate moment of the match between FC Bayern and FC Augsberg today. Lewandwoski now leads by one goal leaving behind the legendary player Gerd Muller who was holding the record of scoring 40 goals in a single season to date. The German Football League has hailed the Poland striker’s record as a ‘historic achievement’. 

A breathtaking match

In the match, Bayern Munich started their lead against FC Augsburg with an own goal from Augsburg’s defender at nine minutes to the play. This was followed by a fantastic goal by Serge Gnabry at the 23rd minutes. The Bayern midfielder Kimmich added a third goal in the 34th minutes of the first half of play. Kingsley Coman scored the fourth goal for Bayern in the next 10 minutes. Though the Augsburg team lowered the gap by two goals, the ultimate winning moment came after, Polish striker, Lewandowski scored a goal and created a record.

In the end, the audience paid tearful farewell to David Alaba, Jerome Boateng, and Javi Martinez for their brilliant contribution to Bayern for a decade.

Lewandowski’s achievements

Lewandowski, the captain of the Poland national team has earned over 110 caps till now. He was also a member of the national team at UEFA EURO 2012, UEFA EURO 2016, and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Striker Lewandowski received four separate official Guinness World Records certificates for the incredible feat of a nine-minute, five-goal haul for Bayern Munich against Wolfsburg. The records include, Fastest Bundesliga hat-trick (3 minutes 22 seconds), Fastest Four Goals in a Bundesliga Match (5 minutes 42 seconds), Fastest Five Goals Scored in a Bundesliga Match (8 minutes 59 seconds), Most Goals Scored by a Substitute in a Bundesliga Match (5 goals).

The Poland captain also won the FIFA Best Men’s Player Award for 2020 beating Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi and the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year Award 2019/20. Lewandowski is known for his positioning, technique, finishing and also been praised for his outstanding work ethic, fitness, mentality, and discipline, both on the pitch and in training.

Bayern crowned Champions of Bundesliga

Last weekend, the Bavarians secured their ninth consecutive league crown after RB Leipzig’s was defeated by Borussia Dortmund which automatically handed Bayern Munich the Bundesliga championship crown. Subsequently, Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Monchengladbach 6-0 that included a brilliant hat-trick from Lewandowski.

During that match at Freiburg last Saturday, Lewandowski equaled Gerd Muller’s half-century-old goal record in a German league match.

Bayern Munich now has 30 Bundesliga titles and 31 German league crowns in total. The team leads the standing with 75 points followed by RB Leipzig with 64 points. Team Wolfsburg is in the third position with 60 points while Borussia Dortmund with 58 points stands fourth. Apart from Lewandowski, the other top players for this season are A. Silva from team Eintracht Frankfurt having scored 27 goals, and Erling Haaland from team B. Dortmund with 25 goals.

The Bundesliga is a professional association football league in Germany founded by the German Football Association in 1962 in Dortmund. The league with 18 teams is now operated by the German Football League. The league ranked fourth in Europe according to UEFA‘s league coefficient ranking for the 2020 – 21 season.
