INDIA: This international coffee day instead of having a coffee drink to enhance your energy, why not use it on your skin to give it a perfect glow. International Coffee Day is celebrated on October 1 every year. Making the daily journey from tropical Africa to the breakfast mugs of households all over the world, coffee beans have been scattered all over the world for more than 600 years

We all love coffee in some way or other. Be it a hot cup of coffee in a chilly morning or cold coffee in a humid summer, or coffee pastries, cake, chocolates, so many options we have when it comes to coffee.

But there is one more secret about coffee, it gives an instant glow to your skin. It helps reduce the intensity of dark circles, brightens your skin, gently removes dead skin cells and exfoliates the skin, and smoothens skin texture. That’s why coffee is not only just a part of every household kitchen, it has a prominent place in the makeup kit of every woman.

These days women of every age are using coffee-based skincare products. While a cup of coffee can provide antioxidants internally, the apparent skin benefits from coffee are primarily obtained topically. This involves making a mask, scrub, or paste from fresh coffee grounds and applying them to your skin directly.

Coimbatore-based Beauty expert Megha Asher, says, “Coffee-infused skincare is becoming increasingly popular, and for good reason – coffee is a great pick-me-up for you and your skin! Caffeine, found in coffee, helps boost blood flow in the skin. This can help with brightening the under-eyes and with cellulite, stretch marks, and scarring. Coffee can also be soothing and de-puffing, being rich in chlorogenic acids which are known to help with inflammation. Containing polyphenols, coffee also helps protect the skin against UV and other environmental damage. Lastly, coffee also makes for a great exfoliant! What’s not to love?”

Incorporate coffee in your skincare routine

So how should you go about incorporating coffee into your skincare routine?

Post-Sun care: Dilute a freshly brewed cup of coffee with water. Soak a cloth in this mixture. Squeeze out the excess and gently pat the cloth onto the affected areas. Repeat several times a day, if necessary.

Face and Body Scrub: Does anything get better than coffee and chocolate? We don’t think so! Blend your coffee grounds and mix them with a teaspoon of coffee powder. Add in a tablespoon of olive, almond, or coconut oil and shea butter (if you’re feeling extra indulgent and can get your hands on some).

Face Mask: Megha Asher suggests, “Rejuvenate your skin with a quick and easy coffee-infused face mask. Mix 1 tablespoon of ground coffee beans with 1 tablespoon each of cocoa powder and oatmeal. Add in some coconut milk (or any plant-based milk) to make the mixture a paste. Apply the paste evenly on your skin and keep it on until it dries down. Wash off the lukewarm water and follow up with a moisturizer or face oil.”

For Under-Eyes: Mix half a tablespoon each of coffee grounds and olive oil. Mix with a few drops of water to form a paste. Gently pat the paste in your undereye area. Do not rub. Leave the paste on for 5-10 minutes. Gently wipe off with a soft cloth.

For the Hair and Scalp: Being slightly acidic, coffee helps balance the pH of your scalp. An imbalance in pH can result in fizziness, breakage, etc. Rinse your hair with cold-brewed coffee 1-2 times a week.

Megha Asher gives an excellent tip for an instant glow, “You can even get creative with some coffee ice cubes! Pour some freshly brewed coffee onto an ice tray and put it in the freezer. To use your coffee ice cubes, wrap them in a muslin cloth (or something similar that is thin and soft) and gently dab it in your under-eye area.”
