AUSTRALIA: Dairy Australia has announced the appointment of Dr. Matthew Shaffer as its new Chief Executive Officer, marking a significant change in leadership for the national service body. Dr. Shaffer is set to assume the role on 16 July 2025, succeeding current Managing Director Dr. David Nation, who will step down after seven years of service.
The appointment follows an extensive recruitment process conducted by the Dairy Australia Board. In a statement, the Board cited Dr. Shaffer’s strong commercial experience in agriculture, passion for the dairy sector, and strategic vision as key factors in his selection.
“Matt brings a wealth of experience and a proven ability to deliver meaningful change,” said Dairy Australia Chair Paul Roderick. “His leadership at DataGene, along with his deep engagement across global networks, government, and the dairy industry, positions him well to lead Dairy Australia into a new era.”

Dr. Shaffer currently serves as CEO of DataGene, an industry-owned organisation dedicated to driving genetic improvement in Australia’s dairy herds. His previous roles include CEO of Holstein Australia and a finance career with the Hancock Agricultural Investment Group, where he played an international operations role.
His appointment coincides with the development of Dairy Australia’s new five-year strategy, which the organisation states will focus on helping farmers unlock the potential of their businesses, adapt to future challenges, and support industry sustainability.
“As we finalise our new strategic direction following consultation with farmers, Matt’s leadership will be critical in ensuring we continue to deliver value to the dairy community,” Roderick added. “He brings a clear focus on innovation, resilience, and sustainability—areas that are central to our future.”

Dr. Shaffer expressed his enthusiasm for the role, noting his long-standing connection to the dairy industry and commitment to advancing its growth. “I am honoured to join Dairy Australia at such a pivotal time,” he said. “I look forward to working with farmers, stakeholders, and the broader agricultural community to support a strong and sustainable future for the industry.”
Leadership Legacy: Strengthening Dairy Australia’s Role in Innovation and Sustainability
The leadership transition also marks the departure of Dr. David Nation, who announced in late 2024 his intention to step down by mid-2025. His tenure is credited with advancing research, innovation, and sustainability within the sector.
“David has challenged the status quo and championed initiatives that have had a lasting impact on the dairy industry,” Roderick said. “His leadership in key programs such as DairyBio and DairyFeedbase has been instrumental, as has his work in enhancing sustainability efforts and community engagement.”
Under Dr. Nation’s leadership, Dairy Australia has undergone several organizational reforms aimed at delivering greater value to farmers and strengthening regional connections. His contributions to the national research agenda and industry development have been widely acknowledged by stakeholders across the sector.

Dairy Australia has formally thanked Dr. Nation for his service and leadership over the past seven years and extended a warm welcome to Dr. Shaffer as he prepares to step into the role.
The transition comes at a time of evolving challenges and opportunities for the dairy industry, including climate resilience, technology adoption, and global market shifts. The new CEO will be expected to navigate these complexities while maintaining a focus on farmer outcomes and long-term industry sustainability.
Dr. Shaffer’s leadership is anticipated to influence the future direction of the organisation as it enters its next chapter of growth and adaptation within the broader Australian agricultural landscape.
