INDIA: NDA candidate Draupadi Murmu continues to bask in media presence as she creates history as the first tribal woman President India has ever elected. Now that former President Ram Nath Kovind has completed his term in office, and Murmu has already been installed onto the Presidential seat on July 25, 2022, new emerging information about the NDA candidate’s life has surfaced. Citizens and political leaders alike all hail this master stroke by the BJP, cleverly electing a tribal candidate at the helm of Presidential power as an alibi of tribal representation.

Winning in opposition to the UPA Presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha, Draupadi Murmu is now the 15th President of India. She is also an emerging leader from her own tribal community and the first tribal woman to become governor in Jharkhand state. The State witnessed outstanding leadership and strength under her tribal authority.

Born in a small, obscure village named Baidaposi of Mayurbanj district in Odisha on June 20, 1958, Draupadi Murmu excelled in academics and flourished as a student despite her many social hardships and prejudices as well as a member of a Santhali family. Draupadi Murmu also happens to be a great devotee of Lord Shiva. After finishing her higher studies, she served as a school teacher in the Shri Aurobindo Integral Education Centre in Rairangpur. Later, she joined hands with the BJP in 1997 to begin her career in politics.

Her father and grandfather both hold powerful positions as village heads under the Panchayati Raj systems. Murmu’s husband, a banker, named Shyam Charan Murmu, passed away in 2014. The couple’s two sons have passed away, and one daughter, Itishri Murmu, remains.

Despite her many limitations as a tribal woman from some of the least developed areas in India, Murmu was able to graduate from a women’s college and later started her political journey as a councillor of the Rairangpur Nagar panchayat in 1997. She also served as the BJP’s National Vice President. She became the first tribal governor of Jharkhand after being impressed by her political streak as a leader in such authoritative positions of power.

Murmu also served as Ministry of State with Independent Charge for Commerce and Transport and Fisheries and Animal Resources Development. She was also an MLA from 2000-2004. She was awarded the prestigious Nilkantha award for her party work as an MLA.

Draupadi Murmu took her oath as the President on July 25, 2022, administered by the Chief Justice of India, N.V Ramana, in the Central Hall of Parliament. The outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind and the new President arrived in the Parliament in a ceremonial procession shortly before the swearing-in commenced.

In her first address to the nation, Murmu thanked MPs and MLAs for electing her as the first tribal President of India. She said, “I am the country’s first President who was born in independent India. We will have to speed up our efforts to meet our freedom fighters’ expectations with the citizens of independent India.”
