INDIA/PAKISTAN: In a recent seismic event, several regions in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, and Pakistan experienced tremors caused by an earthquake. The earthquake, measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale, originated approximately 70 kilometers southeast of Fayzabad, Afghanistan, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre.
Although the earthquake’s epicenter was located in the border region between Afghanistan and Tajikistan, its considerable depth of 223 kilometers resulted in minimal damage and impact.
The earthquake struck at 10:19 am local time, with Poonch and Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir being among the affected areas.
According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake’s epicenter was at coordinates Lat: 36.56 and Long: 71.13 in Afghanistan. It occurred at a depth of 220 kilometers and was recorded at 11:19 am. Tremors were also reported from various other regions, including Islamabad, Peshawar, Swat, Haripur, Malakand, Abbottabad, Batgram, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, Texlia, and Pind Dadan Khan.
No loss of life or significant damage to property has been reported in Pakistan due to earthquakes of various magnitudes. It is worth noting that the country faced a devastating earthquake in 2005, which resulted in the tragic loss of 74,000 lives.
In a separate incident, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook Tokyo and eastern parts of Japan on Friday. However, no tsunami warning was issued in connection with this seismic activity. The earthquake’s epicenter was located 44.5 kilometers beneath the surface, off the east coast of the Chiba Peninsula.
Although intense shaking was reported in Chiba and Ibaraki prefectures, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) indicated a low likelihood of significant injuries or fatalities resulting from the earthquake. This news brings relief to the affected regions.
The recent earthquake tremors felt in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, and Pakistan have served as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of seismic events. Fortunately, due to the earthquake’s depth, the impact on life and property has been minimal.
Meanwhile, Japan also experienced a moderate earthquake, but with no major consequences. It is crucial to remain vigilant and prepared for such natural disasters, emphasizing the importance of implementing robust measures to mitigate the potential risks associated with earthquakes.
