SPAIN/INDIA: A series of photography exhibitions, Flamenco-India by Carlos Saura, would be staged by Instituto Cervantes New Delhi in association with Casa de la India in Valladolid, Spain. The series of photographs were displayed at the centre till February 2022. This would be a posthumous commendation, in order to honour the grand works of the Spanish film director, Carlos Saura ( 1932-2023).

The screening event would take place at the Instituto Cervantes ( Hanuman Road, 48, 110001, New Delhi). The screening of the films is set as per the schedule mentioned below.

Luis Bunuel, Pedro Almodovar, and Carlos Saura were some of the most popular directors of Spanish cinema, gaining international recognition. Carlos Saura’s expertise, replete with the visual constraints of directing, spans more than six decades in the seventh art.

His adoration for reimagining traditional Spanish culture and placing it in the present, while at the same time, predicting the future of his artistic identity, has been accompanied by both photography and cinema.

The Spanish Film Academy gave his skill major appreciation by conferring the Goya of Honour in 2023. Attention must also be drawn to the Aragonese director who was given the Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award at the IFFI (International Film Festival of India) in Goa last year.

Murtaza Ali Khan, curator and presenter of the series, said, “Carlos Saura was not just one of the most important filmmakers from the Spanish world alongside Luis Buñuel and Pedro Almodóvar, but he was one of the most influential filmmakers worldwide.”

“Yet his films, apart from Carmen and the Flamenco trilogy at large, have not reached the Indian audience like those of Almodóvar. That’s why the upcoming retrospective on the Spanish master filmmaker holds great importance from the point of view of introducing the younger Indian audiences to some of the most fascinating works of Carlos Saura,” he concluded.
