UNITED STATES: Gervonta Davis put one of his best performance to date on Saturday night lives SHOWTIME PPV held at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta.
Davis defeated Mario Barrios by stoppage in the 11th round to become the new WBA ‘Regular’ Junior Welterweight Champion. He is an undefeated WBA Lightweight Champion and has a record of 25 wins and no losses. 24 of his 25 wins came from the way of knockout. His opponent Mario Barrios was the WBA (Regular) super lightweight champion before he got defeated by Davis. Barrios now has a record of 26 wins and one loss while 17 of his wins came from the way of knockout.
This was Davis’ first fight at 140lbs and everyone was curious about how Davis will perform at a weight class above his regular weight class. Since, Barrios is taller than Davis, everyone thought that it could give him a reach advantage.
Davis started well by winning the first round but Barrios went on to win the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds. Davis dropped Barrios twice in the 8th round but couldn’t finish him before the end of round no.8.
The fight was very close and that’s when Floyd Mayweather, who was at the ringside of Davis told him that he was down on the cards entering the 10th round. After that Davis became more aggressive and he defeated Barrios with a vicious shot to the body. Interestingly, Davis won the fight by TKO.
After the fight, Davis said, “I made it tough, I made it tough. I definitely could have made it easier but it is what it is. “I went up two weight classes and I got the job done.”
