INDONESIA: The eruption of the volcano Mount Merapi on Wednesday caused gushing ash, gas, and an explosion of extremely hot rock fragments in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The eruption unleashed a river of lava and gas clouds flowing 3,000 meters (9,850 ft) down the slopes of Mount Merapi. Mount Merapi is Indonesia’s most active volcano.

According to the reports, there have not been any reports of casualties. However, the alert is being maintained at the second highest level, and people are instructed to stay out of a danger zone around the crater.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (CVGHM)  stated that since Wednesday morning Merapi had ejected burning hot clouds at least 30 times. Meanwhile, social media has been buzzing with photographs of ash burying the homes of some residents of the area.

The eruption was Mount Merapi’s biggest lava flow since authorities raised its danger level in November. At that time, nearly 2000 people living in the Sleman and Magelang districts near the volcano were evacuated.

The Indonesian islands lie on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”,  a horseshoe-shaped series of seismic fault lines, susceptible to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Among the dozens across Indonesia’s ring of fire, Mount Merapi is the most active volcano. The 2,968-meter high volcano has erupted consistently since 2018. In 2010, its most deadly eruption occurred, killing 340 people and leaving more than 60,000 displaced.
