JAPAN: A violent 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit Japan on Saturday. The natural disaster struck Japan’s capital Tokyo at around 11:07 pm. Moreover, the other nine prefectures felt the vibrations injuring a sum of 100 people. According to the reports, the earthquake was strongly felt in Fukushima, the eastern coast of Japan. Stretching to about 70 km, the earthquake was an unnerving reminder of the 8.9 magnitude quake that struck Japan 10 years ago.

Along with the losses suffered on Saturday, the quake brought back bitter memories of the 2011 disaster. In 2011, the earthquake which was followed by a tsunami melted three nuclear plants and destroyed the homes of millions. This year, the earthquake happened just a few weeks prior to the 10th anniversary of the disaster where Japan lost more than 18,000 lives.

In a statement, United States Geological Survey (USGS) stated that there was no danger of a tsunami. According to the meteorological agency, the epicenter of the earthquake was off the coast of Fukushima. Despite this, the residents living in the low-lying areas on the coastal parts were advised to move to higher regions.
