INDIA. Mumbai: Ramesh Bais (76), who served as the Governor of Jharkhand, became the new Maharashtra Governor after President Droupadi Murmu accepted the resignation of Bhagat Singh Koshyari, amid a reshuffle of the governors of 13 states, as per a Rashtrapati Bhavan communiqué on Sunday.

Koshyari’s exit comes following a controversy over his remarks on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and his term continued to be controversial till Uddhav Thackeray was the chief minister of Maharashtra. In a statement issued on January 23, Koshyari (80) stated that he had expressed his desire to step down from political responsibilities to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the latter’s recent visit to Mumbai.

Besides, Koshyari had held over the appointment of 12 names recommended by the MVA government for nomination to the Maharashtra Legislative Council for over one and a half years. The names were recommended in November 2020.
