INDIA. Mumbai: With a heavy surge in COVID-19 positive cases and  Mumbai reporting 5,504 new infections, the highest ever single-day spike since the beginning of the pandemic on Thursday, Maharashtra was starring at second COVID-19 wave.

On Wednesday, Mumbai reported 5,185 fresh infections, which was the highest spike since March 2020. Besides, on Thursday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation(BMC) reported 14 deaths, more than double of Mumbai’s death toll on Wednesday (6). Even as there was an addition of 400 cases, the BMC stepped up random testing at crowded places in the city.

Similarly in Kalyan Dombivali, near Mumbai, 987 new positive cases, with four deaths, were reported on Thursday. Also, 22 inmates of Nanded jail tested coronavirus positive. Given the spike in cases, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray held a meeting with Health Minister Rajesh Tope and Chief Secretary Sitam Kunte to review the situation on Thursday night.

The Maharashtra Health ministry said that the top 10 districts where maximum active cases are concentrated are – Pune, Nagpur, Mumbai, Thane, Nashik, Aurangabad, Bengaluru Urban, Nanded, Jalgaon, and Akola. Maharashtra reported 31,855 new Covid-19 cases, 15098 discharges, and 95 deaths on Wednesday. Many districts are observing partial lockdown in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra, emerged as the first state in the country to administer over 5 million Covid-19 vaccine doses on Thursday. “Maharashtra is at top of the country in the number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered. We are the first State to cross the 5 million doses benchmark, Dr. Pradeep Vyas, Principal Secretary, Health, Maharashtra said on Thursday.

The Union Health Ministry said that the top 10 districts in the country, where maximum active cases are concentrated are – Pune, Nagpur, Mumbai, Thane, Nashik, Aurangabad, Nanded, Jalgaon and Akola-Maharashtra, and Bengaluru Urban-(Karnatak). It also said two states-Maharashtra and Punjab are of ‘grave concern’, which have shown a recent surge in cases. Maharashtra reported more than 28,000 cases in the last 24 hours and Punjab is reporting the huge number of cases in proportion to its population.”

India recorded 53,476 new Covid-19 cases, 26,490 recoveries, and 251 deaths in the last 24 hours. According to the union health ministry, five states — Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, and Gujarat are reporting a surge in the Covid-19 daily new cases. These states account for 77.44% of the new cases.
