The Oculus creator posted a blog titled “If you die in the game, you die in real life.” In the blog, he claims that the virtual reality (VR) headset known as “NerveGear,” which featured in the anime television series, Sword Art Online, inspired him to develop the lethal gaming device.

Luckey said that the idea of tying the gamer’s real life to their virtual avatar has always fascinated him. He felt so because it immediately raises the stakes and forces people to fundamentally rethink how they interact with the virtual world and its players.

In the anime series, if the players fail to escape a mad scientist’s trap, the players who wear this kind of headset will experience microwave-induced brain melt.

Things get a lot worse when it comes to Luckey’s new Oculus VR headset, which he claims uses charge modules to blow up a person’s head.

According to Luckey, in contrast to the fictional NerveGear, he was unable to create a device that could kill its user with “powerful microwaves,” so he chose explosives to blow their heads off.

The headset is real

Luckey said that the bad news is that he has only figured out the half that kills gamers. He asserts that the good news is that his team is halfway through the development of a real NerveGear. According to Luckey, “The perfect-VR half of the equation is still many years away.”

He adds that his Oculus VR headset makes it possible to experience a wide range of virtual reality experiences.
