INDIA: In the small town of Athani, Karnataka, where the Krishna River flows quietly along the state’s border, a young boy began his journey with little more than determination and the values instilled by his family. That boy, Mukesh Somaiya, went on to become not only a businessman in fabric and real estate but also a figure deeply engaged in social causes. His story reflects the resilience of individuals who rise from modest beginnings to lead lives of both enterprise and service.
Somaiya completed his early education at J. A. High School in Athani before moving to Sangli, Maharashtra. The move marked the beginning of his entrepreneurial path, one that was far from easy. Establishing himself in the competitive fabric and real estate sector required persistence and long hours of effort. Yet every challenge, he says, only strengthened his resolve.

In 1987, at the age of 26, Somaiya married Rohini, who would become not only his life partner but also his collaborator in building a future. Together, they nurtured their family with values of trust, discipline, and resilience. They raised two children, Amit and Darsika – both of whom continue to bring them pride. For Somaiya, family has always been the cornerstone, a source of stability while navigating professional and personal pursuits.
A Turning Point in Pune
When the family shifted to Pune, a new dimension opened in his life. Known for his outgoing nature, Somaiya enjoyed meeting people and forming friendships across professions. These interactions exposed him to individuals engaged in education, business, and, importantly, social service.
It was this exposure that shifted his perspective from success as a purely financial pursuit to one that also carried a social responsibility. Inspired by those around him, Somaiya began dedicating time and resources to helping others. His wife’s role was crucial: while he involved himself in social causes, she managed their fabric business, ensuring that the household and enterprise remained steady.
From medical assistance for the underprivileged to support for pilgrims, his efforts grew steadily. He found satisfaction not only in entrepreneurial success but also in making a difference in the lives of others. “Success is not just measured in profits, but in the positive impact we leave behind,” Somaiya reflects, a belief that continues to guide him.
The Balancing Act of Mukesh Somaiya
For many, balancing personal life, business, and community involvement can be overwhelming. Somaiya, however, has relied on discipline and structure. His day begins with a morning walk and yoga, practices that he credits with keeping both mind and body in balance. This routine provides the energy to manage his varied responsibilities.
Family remains central. Travel, particularly within India, has been a shared passion, and together they have explored almost every corner of the country. These journeys, he says, have strengthened their bond and created lasting memories. At home, when not engaged in business or travel, he devotes time to social work alongside friends and organisations committed to community welfare.
Facing Adversity
Adversity, Somaiya believes, is inevitable but also formative. He recalls one of the most difficult moments of his life in 2018, during a train journey from Pune to Mantralayam in Andhra Pradesh. When the train came under attack by dacoits, panic spread among passengers. Rather than succumb to fear, Somaiya chose to resist, confronting the attackers until they fled.

That incident, he says, reaffirmed his conviction to stand firm in the face of challenges. “I have never believed in running away from problems. If we face them with courage, we come out stronger,” he explains.
The strength to confront difficulties, he emphasises, comes not only from within but also from the unwavering support of family. Their faith in him has been a constant source of motivation, enabling him to stay focused on goals even during uncertain times.
Lessons and Message
Somaiya often draws inspiration from people who dedicate their lives selflessly to others. Observing their commitment reinforces his belief that one’s goals should extend beyond personal success to bring about positive change in society.
When asked what message he would give to those aspiring to do something different in life, his advice is grounded yet aspirational: “Be brave and follow your dreams with confidence. The path may not always be easy, but if your goals are clear and your heart is strong, success will follow.”
He stresses the importance of family support, humility, and kindness. For him, confidence and ambition are essential, but they must be balanced with respect for others. Above all, he insists, true success lies in giving back to society and ensuring that one’s journey uplifts others as well.
A Life of Purpose
Today, Somaiya’s life is a blend of entrepreneurship, social involvement, and family values. His story illustrates how determination, resilience, and a willingness to embrace new ideas can transform a life. From the classrooms of Athani to the bustling cityscape of Pune, from building a business to supporting community causes, his journey has been marked by purpose.
In reflecting on his path, Somaiya underscores that no matter where one comes from, it is determination and belief in oneself that shape destiny. His own life stands as a reminder that challenges are not roadblocks but opportunities to grow—and that success, at its most meaningful, is measured not only in what one achieves but also in what one gives.
