11 Killed, 7 Injured As 3-Story Building Collapses In Mumbai’s Malad Area

INDIA. Mumbai: At least eleven people, including 6 women and two children, were killed and seven others injured after a residential building collapsed in the New Collector compound, located on Abdul Hamid road at Malad West in North Mumbai late on Wednesday night.

While 18 people were rescued by the Mumbai fire brigade, the search and rescue operation to trace the people still trapped is  on. As per updates, 11 people have been reported dead so far. Our prayers for the affected families. We hope for the quick recovery of the injured. May the deceased rest in peace, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said in a tweet. The civic body also said that residents from three nearby buildings have been evacuated as structures were not in good condition.

During heavy rains, a ground +2 building fell on another two adjoining buildings (one story chawls) killing 11 people instantly. The mishap occurred at around 11 PM on Wednesday. Dozens of rescuers were clearing the debris to find any residents possibly still trapped, police officer Ravindra Kadam said. The injured persons have been shifted to the Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Municipal General Hospital in Kandivali West(BDBA) hospital.

Maharashtra minister Aslam Shaikh, who reached the incident site, said that the collapse happened due to heavy rains. Heavy monsoon rains during the day flooded several parts of the city that is India’s financial and entertainment capital.

As per the names provided by the BMC the victims include: dead- Sahil Sarfraz Sayed(9) Male, John Irana(13) male, Arifa Shaikh(8) female, unknown (40) Male, unknown (15) Male, unknown (08) female, unknown (03) female child, unknown (05) female child, unknown (30) female, unknown (50) female and unknown (8) male. Injured: Mari Kumari Ranganath(30), Dhanlaxmi Baby(56), Alim Sheikh(49), Rizwan Sayyed (33), Surya Mani Yadav(39), Karim Khan(30), Gulzar Ahmed Ansari(26). The condition of all, except Mari Kumari Ranganath, is described as stable.

Heavy rains lashed Mumbai and its suburbs on Wednesday, causing flooding on roads and rail tracks and disrupting suburban train services as the southwest monsoon arrived in the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red alert’ for Mumbai, and neighboring Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts warning of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places.
