G7 Nations Say They Support Tokyo 2020 Olympics

The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games that was postponed last year due to Covid-19 has been scheduled to take place this year

UNITED KINGDOM: The Group of Seven nations has showed their support towards holding the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic games this year. A communique issued on Sunday mentions about the G7 nation’s support to hold the same in a safe and secure manner as a symbol of global unity in overcoming COVID-19.

Earlier, the U.S. President Joe Biden reaffirmed his support for the Tokyo Summer Olympics during his meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga. During his meeting with Yoshihide Suga other issues like COVID-19 situation, North Korea, China and climate change were also discussed at length.

The 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics involve 33 competitions and 339 events, held across 42 venues. The Paralympics scheduled between August 24 and September 5 features 539 events, across 22 sports, at 21 venues. Majority of the events are in the Greater Tokyo area. Some football games and the marathon are in Sapporo in Hokkaido. This year will feature new Olympic sports, including surfing, sport climbing, skateboarding, baseball and karate.

The 2020 Summer Olympics games were scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020 but was postponed till summer 2021.

Tokyo was selected as the host city during the 125th International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 7 September 2013. Japan will be hosting the Summer Olympic Games for the second time, the first being also in Tokyo in 1964.

To protect clean athletes, The Organizing Committee is collaborating closely with related bodies to implement a range of anti-doping activities including doping control during the games.
