The Fire of Sindoor: Strikes, Sacrifice, and South Asia’s Reckoning

New book traces India’s 2025 military response, intertwining human experiences and regional power shifts

INDIA: Ahmedabad-based Write India Publishers is set to release The Fire of Sindoor: India’s Strike Against Terror, a compelling nonfiction account of Operation Sindoor—India’s precision surgical strikes conducted on May 7, 2025, targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). Authored by Roshan Bhondekar and Niloy Chattaraj, the book explores the operation’s roots, execution, and far-reaching consequences, set against the tragic backdrop of the April 22 Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives.

Dedicated to the Indian Armed Forces and the victims of the Pahalgam massacre, The Fire of Sindoor offers both a tribute and a thorough chronicle of one of South Asia’s most volatile chapters. It aims to deliver a balanced narrative that merges tactical analysis with human emotion.

A Tapestry of Conflict, Symbolism, and Strategy

In the preface, the authors trace the origins of the book to the immediate aftermath of Operation Sindoor, a mission launched in retaliation for the Pahalgam attack, widely attributed to terror groups including Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. Named after sindoor—the sacred vermilion powder that symbolises justice—the operation serves as the book’s thematic core.

Through anonymised testimonies from soldiers, intelligence operatives, and civilians in PoJK, the authors create a textured narrative that intertwines military precision, cultural symbolism, and geopolitical tensions.

The book’s introduction opens on the dark, moonless night when Indian forces struck nine terrorist strongholds in Bahawalpur and Muridke. This moment is portrayed not only as a tactical triumph but also as a cultural and political statement. Detailed accounts of cutting-edge weaponry—SCALP missiles, BrahMos systems, and loitering munitions—are woven into an examination of decades-long cross-border terrorism and the resulting diplomatic reverberations.

A Rigorous and Humanized Narrative

Drawing on reports from Indian and global media outlets, as well as interviews with defense experts and journalists, the book promises accuracy and depth. Described in its synopsis as a “riveting chronicle,” the book delves into the personal courage of those involved, the meticulous planning behind the strikes, and the broader implications for counterterrorism and regional stability. It dissects the reactions from Pakistan and the international community, offering a panoramic view of the consequences and complexities of retaliatory action.

The Authors Behind the Mission

Roshan Bhondekar, an Indian-Spanish filmmaker and author, is known for his award-winning short films (The Shoes, Hausla Aur Raste) and motivational writing. His storytelling acumen brings emotional resonance to the book. Co-author Niloy Chattaraj, a seasoned educator in electronic warfare communication, lends a scientific and analytical rigor, adding depth to the military and strategic dimensions.

In a notable act of social commitment, Bhondekar and Chattaraj have pledged 100% of the book’s royalties to Indian NGOs supporting orphaned children, aligning with the book’s broader themes of justice, healing, and national duty.

A Timely Contribution

As interest in India-Pakistan relations and counterterrorism intensifies, The Fire of Sindoor stands out by focusing on a recent and consequential operation. By blending technical analysis with human stories, it seeks to resonate with readers interested in military history, strategic affairs, and South Asian geopolitics.

As the launch of The Fire of Sindoor approaches, Write India Publishers anticipates the book will spark conversations across academic, policy, and public spheres. While it remains to be seen if the book fully achieves its goal of clarifying a complex conflict, its thorough research, sincere approach, and humanitarian focus establish it as a notable contribution to contemporary nonfiction.
