Poland Honours Kolkata Consular Leader at KIFF 2025 for Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Joydeep Roy Receives Prestigious Bene Merito Award for Advancing Poland’s Diplomatic, Cultural and Business Presence in India

INDIA: At the 2025 Kolkata International Film Festival, a significant diplomatic moment unfolded alongside the cinematic celebrations. HOM Piotr A. Świtalski, representing the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, conferred the Bene Merito honorary distinction upon Joydeep Roy, Chief Consular Officer at the Honorary Consulate of Poland in Kolkata. The honour recognises his exceptional contribution to promoting Poland’s global presence and deepening Poland India relations.

The Bene Merito distinction is one of the most prestigious honours awarded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland. It is bestowed upon individuals and institutions whose efforts have strengthened Poland’s standing on the international stage. Recipients include diplomats, scholars, business leaders and cultural ambassadors who play pivotal roles in advancing Poland’s global identity. The award reflects Poland’s appreciation for those who champion its values, promote cooperation and strengthen international partnerships.

For Joydeep Roy, the recognition underscores years of commitment to elevating Poland India engagement across diplomacy, business, culture and academic exchange. Receiving the award, he remarked that the distinction represents more than ceremonial prestige, describing it as a responsibility to carry Poland’s voice and vision to wider global audiences.

In his acceptance speech, Roy emphasised the need for greater economic collaboration between Poland and India, noting that trade volumes remain inadequate despite seven decades of bilateral diplomatic relations. He called for deeper research to understand the reasons behind this shortfall and proposed the establishment of a Poland India Development Centre, known in Polish as Centrum Rozwoju Polska Indie. He referenced his earlier initiative, the Centre for Europe India Studies, established with prominent scholars from both nations, which faced challenges due to its limited business orientation.

Reflecting on his personal journey, Roy spoke with emotion about the three lands that define his identity. India, he said, is his Janmabhumi, the place of birth. India and Poland together form his Karmabhumi, the land that shapes his work and purpose. As for his Jiwanbhumi, the place of ultimate belonging, he shared that the answer continues to evolve.

He noted that his life had been marked by moments of struggle but also transformation. A short quote, he said, changed his perspective. When you feel pain you are living. When you feel the pain of others you become a human being. He shared that he is striving every day to embody the latter.

Concluding his address with warmth and humility, Roy acknowledged the audience’s anticipation for Polish cuisine and refreshments, signalling the end of his speech. He closed by stating that the award ties him to Poland through commitment, honour and above all, love.

The ceremony at KIFF 2025 served not only as a recognition of an individual but also as a testament to the growing cultural and diplomatic synergy between Poland and India.
